The Protean Career Orientation

Have you ever heard of the term "career orientation"? Although it might sound like something complex, it's actually very simple to understand. Think of the word 'orientation.' What does that mean? Orientation means direction or a way that guides your path. So in simple terms, career orientation is the guide/map that you use to direct you on your journey within your professional career (Hirschi & Koen, 2021). For example, wanting to climb up the corporate ladder in your organisation or doing mundane everyday tasks that give you fulfilment and inner joy. These examples are two stark examples that show how two different people might guide their preferred career choices.

From Confused to Confident: The Power of Career Tests

From as young as 5 years old, we are all asked by our teachers, parents, and family what we want to be when we grow up. Some kids play with trucks and say they want to be a truck driver; others play nurse and patient, and they will reply giddily they want to be a nurse. But as we grow up, so many opportunities and possibilities are presented to us, making that one important life-long decision very difficult (that was my experience, at least). I had no idea who I wanted to be or what my future career journey would look like, and as a result I was indecisive, anxious, and fearful in case I made the wrong decision.
